2027 | DOCUMENTARY | POST-PRODUCTION
Confronting, expository, nonchalant.
Aunty Marlene is known to be the first black (first nations) female saxophonist in Australia and rightly so. I long contemplated on what an appropriate title for this documentary project would be. So much so that I refused to touch these files for a couple years until I knew I had the right instinct to justify the story - purely because there was so much to uncover and process within the depths and gravity of Aunty Marlene's life, past and present.
It was important to ackowledge that she is not just my Aunty but everyone's Aunty. She is at the heart of Redfern and the aboriginal community in Eora. I met her busking at Central Station, as the entire station was echoing in her sound. I just followed it. I didn't do anything but just convince Aunty Marlene to allow me her stories, her pain, her reflections on broader themes like incarcerations, custodial rape, police brutality, and the many institutional upheavals and organized crimes that changed the Aboriginal narrative under the shadow of a "white Australia."
